Default Disney Movies - Smoke free

"LOS ANGELES - The Walt Disney Co. will eliminate smoking from all its films released under its label and will discourage smoking in films released under its Touchstone and Miramax brands, the company said Wednesday."

Full article can be found here

So, what do you think?
I think they're taking taking this smoking hate way too far. I understand that restaurants are smoke free areas but... I don't really believe that if someone watches 101 Dalmatians s/he starts to smoke after seeing it.

This starts to get ridiculous.

i believe this is the right move smoking should not be potrayed to children as something that is playful or animated and should be removed from television and movies that are on channels targeted at minors(past movies are not censored but future ones should not include cigarettes)

Hmm, a step in a the right direction but probably not 100% necessary.

Makes for good press though.

A bit over the top and ridiculous.

Cruella is a villain anyway, doesn't that portray smoking in a negative way?

You know, one of these days, all the smokers are going to have a protest by smoking in public buildings like malls and resturants just to piss all the haters off.

I don't know any, but I don't really see why they are banning smoking in these films. I'm ok if they ban it in cartoons, which are mostly designed for kids. But they are taking this smoking hate too far imo.

PS. I don't smoke.

There is none, but that isn't the point. The goverment(s) want to get rid of it completely, but don't have the balls to just come out and slap a ban on it, so they are making it more and more difficult for the smokers.

I quit well over a year ago, mainly down to the fact I had the lung capacity of a 45 year old at the age of 22.

A lot of things we do have no real "benefit" should those get the same treatment?

Drinking
Gambaling
etc

Start to take away peoples right to enjoy themselves then there will be hell to pay.

Lots and lots of tax money paid by the poor (at least here in the US).

If the US banned cigarettes I wouldn't be surprised if our income taxes shot up by $100 or more.

I'm not sure why people keep calling it hating. I know the second-hand smoke issues about lung cancer were fabricated, but I also know from experience how scary and dangerous smoking can be for other people. This is a safety issue, not a prejudicial issue. About ten years ago, my family went to eat at a restaurant and my brother had a severe asthma attack, a very uncommon occurence for him. It turns out that he is highly allergic to cigarette smoke. We were nowhere close to the smoking section, but because it was not shut off, it was still able to affect him. Smoking is not something you just do to or for yourself. It gets in the air that everyone breathes. Drinking does not do that, but your right while drinking stop before you are allowed to get behind a wheel because then you are taking its dangers to other people and not just yourself. Gambling is dangerous to no one but yourself.

Price of alcohol would go up, as thats another huge earner for the government.

as someone who has recently quit smoking (with a reason this time, lets hope I can last now)
I really don't give a crap abt it
people know the dangers of smoking before they start doing it, all the health warnings, pictures and other things are just stating the obvious
banning smoking from movies isn't going to make people stop smoking
forbidden fruits, yadda yadda yadda

It is a social thing, been the only non-smoker in a group means you have to babysit the drinks while they go outside to light up..that sucks.
